It’s a case of “reluctant reader syndrome”

Every now and then I go through a spell of “reluctant reader syndrome”, which is when I can’t work up the energy to read a new book. I end up back on a favourite series I have read too many times to count.

I am currently going through such a spell, and my choice of book is the Harry Potter series. Again.

I have a huge pile of new books to read, which seems to keep getting bigger and bigger, but right now I can’t be bothered! I partly blame my two weeks in London: despite going to bookshops and actually buying two books while I was there, and actually being on a placement at a publishing house and therefore surrounded by books all day, I still couldn’t work up the energy to read. All I felt like doing was watching telly when I eventually got home after being on placement and then going out exploring the city. Maybe I had had my fill of books for the day? Who knows?!

I do get worried that it’s a hangover from university when, despite studying English Literature, I only read my uni books and didn’t read the rest of the time, unless I was home for the holidays. Plus the fact that I didn’t read as much during my teen years and I threw out most of my books from my childhood and teens. I am actually shocked at myself for doing that!

It’s also bad that I have several books on the go and haven’t finished them before starting another: I was trying to get out of this bad habit! I think I’ve failed!

I am also reading manuscripts when they come in, so I do read other things, but they’re not published yet, so I’m not sure they count!

I suppose that any reading is better than no reading, but even so, I’m trying to limit myself to only reading my favourite books once a year and keep pushing myself to read more books each year! This year, I am trying to get to 125 books, and so far I have only read 17! And 10 of those are books I’ve read before!

I’m going out on a limb and hereby challenge myself to finish reading all these unfinished books by the end of April!

Currently reading April 2014

Has anyone else ever had this problem? It would make me feel better if I’m not the only one!
