“I want to do something, right here, right now, to shame them, to make them accountable, to show the Capitol that whatever they do or force us to do there is a part of every tribute they can’t own.  That Rue was more than a piece in their Games. And so am I.”

- Katniss Everdeen, “The Hunger Games” by Suzanne Collins

I have just finished reading “Mockingjay”, the third and final book of The Hunger Games trilogy!

I haven’t read anything so awesome in ages! I was wondering how they could top the second book, but then i forgot that there’s clearly got to be some kind of battle for the rebels to try to defeat the Capitol!

There are so many twists in this book, and so many horrific deaths. It’s like the Games but everyone in the country is involved in some way, either as unsuspecting victims, or as the killers. We finally get to understand just how complex the whole thing is, with the people is charge not always being so great as you think, and the underdog being far more useful and important than anyone else thought.

I’m glad Katniss and Peeta survive, but their relationship is again pushed to the limit and in this book it seems very possible that they have been destroyed forever. I was shocked at so many events which happened to make their connection seem impossible, but the ending made me realise that no matter how much stuff can be thrown at you, you can still survive. I have been rooting for those two all the way through because i think they were really meant to be, but you can’t help but wonder why Gale suddenly seems to disappear out the main picture at the ending.

There are some emotional scenes in the book, many of which actually had me in tears (and i don’t cry at books very much), and dreading what else was going to happen. The book covers so much stuff, and seems kind of chaotic at times because i was having to go back a few pages and work out what had just happened that i missed, just like at a certain point near the ending where something really terrible happens and really suddenly, and i had to go back and work out how it happened so quickly.

The book makes you question so many things about humanity, survival, and what’s morally wrong and right. So many innocent people are killed, as well as people who quite frankly deserved it. The abolition of the Games is the one thing i hoped would happen somewhere in the book and i’m glad that it does, because it is a horrendous act to force young people to fight to the death, and kill innocent children.

The violence in this book is worse than the last two, with everything described in rather graphic detail, and it makes you realise just how many more deaths there could have been if these people hadn’t had such good medical knowledge! There are just fights and attacks all the way through this book, with the characters barely having time to acknowledge them before the next one begins. The final battle is panicked and confusing, and then it seems to end quite abruptly, and then it gets all confusing until we work out what went right. The ending is sad but there are happier elements to it, but i won’t spoil it for you! (I’m trying to not give away too many spoilers!)

I give this final book 8/10 because it is a great sequel to the first and second books, and a good ending to the trilogy , despite being a bit confusing at times and maybe trying to cram too much stuff into one book to wrap the story up as neatly as possible. However, it is gripping and scarily addictive, and i couldn’t put it down for the day or so it took me to read it! (I tried to spread it out, but in the end i was too hooked!) I have loved this series so much, and i’d definitely read it again, and i definitely recommend it to anyone!

I have just finished reading “Catching Fire”, the second book of The Hunger Games trilogy!

I was wondering what would happen after Katniss and Peeta’s blatant attempt to mock the Games and the Gamemakers at the end of the first book, and i wasn’t disappointed!

There are so many mind games in this book, it keeps you constantly questioning everyone’s motives! I couldn’t believe that Katniss’ situation would get even worse, but this book really pushes it to the limit!

I don’t want to ruin it for everyone who hasn’t read it yet, so i’ll try not to give it away!

I’ll focus on the unanswered questions from the first book:

1) What happens to the relationship between Katniss and Peeta? Things end up moving rather swiftly on and again we see them trying to protect each other by any means possible.

2) What happens after the Games? Nightmares caused by experiences in the Games, fears of returning to the Games, fears of the dangerous fallout after their actions in the first book. And an unexpected return of their worst nightmare, of course. Which i didn’t see coming, by the way! I was utterly shocked when it was announced, but even more so when they twisted it even more! Just when you think they’ve gone through enough!

There’s so many surprises in this book, and a brilliant twist at the end which i didn’t see coming!! It all happens rather suddenly towards the end of the book, and before i knew it, i was plunged into the beginnings of a whole new adventure, and then the book ended! I am dying to read the final book now!!

There, i hope i wasn’t cryptic and didn’t give too much away to those of you who haven’t read it, but that it makes sense to those of you that have!

I give this second book a big 9/10 because it is the perfect sequel to the first book, answering more questions about the characters and the ruling powers, and bringing so much more terror. It really pushes the limits of the dystopia genre and makes for a brilliant read!

I have just finished reading the first book of The Hunger Games trilogy!

What a book!

It is a scary concept having a competition where young people fight each other and kill or be killed. However, this sort of dystopian fantasy is so much fun to play with, as you can do anything and expect anything to happen!

The Hunger Games

It’s a battle of the survival of the fittest, a bit like 1984 with its Big Brother type surveillance and suppression (although on a less intense level), with the type of competitive atmosphere from the Big Brother house from the popular TV show but set more in a wilderness/gladiator arena! It is truly awesome!

I love Katniss and how well she adapts to the games, as she knows enough about hunting for food and general survival skills. She is so determined to do anything to look after her little sister and mother, and her determination keeps her alive as she battles her enemies. She manages to ally herself with others when the timing is right, but she doesn’t realise just how much she has to depend on the one enemy/ally, who turns out to be something more than the others.

The tension builds nicely throughout the book, and the characters are really well explored, and there are some really rather shocking moments throughout the book, but some tender moments too. I really thought the ending was going to be really surprising, and i was kind of dreading what would happen! But its a great ending though!

I won’t spoil it for you if you’ve not read the books yet, but there are so many little twists and unexpected moments that you are constantly wondering what is going to happen next!

I give this first book a big 9/10 because it is gripping, fascinating, and so horrifyingly but brilliantly dystopic! It’s a fantastic plot and leaves you wondering what will happen next, and i’m so glad there’s two more books!
