I have just finished reading the first book of The Hunger Games trilogy!

What a book!

It is a scary concept having a competition where young people fight each other and kill or be killed. However, this sort of dystopian fantasy is so much fun to play with, as you can do anything and expect anything to happen!

It’s a battle of the survival of the fittest, a bit like 1984 with its Big Brother type surveillance and suppression (although on a less intense level), with the type of competitive atmosphere from the Big Brother house from the popular TV show but set more in a wilderness/gladiator arena! It is truly awesome!

I love Katniss and how well she adapts to the games, as she knows enough about hunting for food and general survival skills. She is so determined to do anything to look after her little sister and mother, and her determination keeps her alive as she battles her enemies. She manages to ally herself with others when the timing is right, but she doesn’t realise just how much she has to depend on the one enemy/ally, who turns out to be something more than the others.

The tension builds nicely throughout the book, and the characters are really well explored, and there are some really rather shocking moments throughout the book, but some tender moments too. I really thought the ending was going to be really surprising, and i was kind of dreading what would happen! But its a great ending though!

I won’t spoil it for you if you’ve not read the books yet, but there are so many little twists and unexpected moments that you are constantly wondering what is going to happen next!

I give this first book a big 9/10 because it is gripping, fascinating, and so horrifyingly but brilliantly dystopic! It’s a fantastic plot and leaves you wondering what will happen next, and i’m so glad there’s two more books!
